LIGHT DUTY NATURAL GAS VEHICLE SYSTEM INTEGRATION & CONVERSION
This course is designed to train students in the theory and operation of Natural Gas Vehicles and the integration of natural gas fuel systems to existing gasoline or diesel platforms. It is intended to provide detailed technical, component level, information and background to automotive engineers, technicians and service providers. Emphasis is placed on safety concerns and the environmental impact of switching to an alternative fuel. The course is not intended to replace manufacturer specific training nor does it present itself as authorized factory representatives.
Upon completion of this course, students will:
Understand the need for alternative fuels
Discuss five popular alternative fuels, their advantages and disadvantages
Understand the properties of natural gas as an automotive fuel
Understand CNG safety, current regulatory guidelines and standards
Be able to identify NGV system components, construction and materials
Understand component operation, i.e. pressure regulators, mixers, safety devices
Identify proper component installation and appropriate industry standards
Be familiar with electronic system integration issues
Identify electronic controls and strategies (open and closed loop systems)
Understand natural gas ignition requirements and differentiate between CI and SI engine operation
Understand vehicle tailpipe emission chemistry, testing and diagnosis
Be familiar with NGV fueling stations, operation and safety concerns
Perform fuel system inspections (including General Cylinder Inspection)
Conduct Driver Orientation overview
Resources: The primary text for the course is: Natural Gas Vehicles System Integration and Service-Delmar Publishers. Additional references include: NFPA 52, “Compressed Natural Gas Vehicular Fuel Systems” and various current multimedia material supplements.
Prerequisites: While there are no mandatory prerequisites, it is recommended that the students have a basic mechanical knowledge. A general automotive background is also advantageous. Additional certifications may include National Institute for ASE A6 and A8 categories of Automotive Electronics, Engine Performance or equivalent.
Competence: Competency will be measured by lab demonstrations, pre and post tests for each module and a written final exam. The exam may be administered in either hardcopy of electronic formats. A passing grade will be a minimum of 705. Certification of successful completion of the training and test will be issued AFV International.
